Authenticity Today

Do we really live in an authentic society today? The media tells us to be what we should look like. All men should be 6'0 tall, tan, dark hair, and muscles everywhere. Women are told that we should be 5'8, a size 0-2, blond hair and big boobs. These are the standards of 'beauty' set by our society. How can we live in an authentic age if were told to look the same? Were told to be different, to be individualistic, and then were told that if we don't look like the 'ideal' human being we aren't beautiful or excepted.
How can we live in an age of authenticity when the media dictates what we think we should look like, how we carry ourselves, and what to believe?

  1. As a male who is 5'9 and under looked because of my height it is common that society looks at me differently and I am not the norm. I do not let media dictate if they think I'm not the right "type" it does not bother me. The media wants us to think we have to look a certain way but if we look at our society from a far we realize not a lot of people meet those standards and we can't live up to what they want. We have to believe in ourselves and find who really are not through society, but through our own eyes.

  2. Yeah I mean I'm not the ideal person either. I'm not what you described above and I don't want to be. Why be that ideal person that EVERYONE wants. That's boring and repetitious. I know it sounds cliché but how else do you stand out? You need to explore the different options within our society to truly find yourself. Now I do however agree that there are certain limitations within a society that people have to follow. You cant go rogue and do something extreme that is going to make you stand out in a negative way. Unfortunately people fall victim to the standards that society sets and its tragic. In some extreme cases people take their lives because they think they are not accepted by the society. People need to take a step back and realize that they DONT need to fit into the norms that society puts out and be their own person.

  3. I don't think our society today is authentic. We have so many beliefs and cross pressures hold could we possibly be authentic. Maybe coming from a person not native to our society an norms would be able to describe a way in which we are authentic. Just a thought!

  4. I agree with Jake in that we have to explore and find ourselves. We should not let the standards in society define who we are. We need to find ways that allow us to stand out and not to let the norms influence or change who we are. In regards to Taylor, the nova effect allows us to find different options of belief or unbelief. Having so many options can be a good thing, but also hard, too.
