The Peggy Lee Axis

  1. "I know what you must be saying to yourselves.
"If that's the way she feels about it why doesn't she just end it all?"
    Oh, no, not me.
I'm in no hurry for that final disappointment.
'Cause I know just as well as I'm standing here talking to you,
That when that final moment comes and I'm breathing my last breath
    I'll be saying to myself-

    Is that all there is?
    Is that all there is?
If that's all there is my friends
    Then let's keep dancing
Let's break out the booze and have a ball
    If that's all there is"

This final part of the song struck me as very significant. It reminds me of discussions with many friends of mine who consider themselves atheists, and whenever I ask "well if nothing happens after we die then whats the point of it all?", many respond with something similar to "you just make the most of the life you got and try to enjoy it as best you can." I think this song, and especially that last verse with the chorus at the end, really reflects that response gracefully.

  2. I completely agree with Christian. I have friends who would consider themselves atheists or friends who just don't really know what they believe. But when we have conversations about it, these are the types of responses I get as well. Peggy Lee seems a little bit more morbid about the whole thing waiting for the "final disappointment" but it relates to a lot of people because if they don't believe in either reincarnation or some kind of after life or heaven, they have no reason to believe that anything else exists or matters after death. I think Peggy Lee highlights that throughout the entire song because in the chorus she says "Then let's keep dancing, break out the booze and have a ball, if that's all there is".

  3. Interesting song lol..... I really don't have any friends that would consider themselves atheist, but I do have many people who are far so far from being properly educated about their religion. They seem to live their life on the free side as if life has no repercussions. From my observation people with this mind set usually find themselves with no purpose or unhappy with things in their life. This could also be a result in lack of morals or values or knowledge of ethical standards, this could be debated.
